Bowtie analysis software
Map threats, barriers and consequences around a hazard and top event — and easily keep them up to date. Bunya Bowtie is built for ease of use, so that you and your team can be building risk bowties almost immediately.
Built for the people who own the risk
Why Bunya Bowtie
Most risk platforms treat Bowtie as a side feature. We treat it as the whole product — which is why it takes minutes to learn and holds up in an audit.
Place a top event, drop in threats, drag out barriers. A full Bowtie in an afternoon instead of a fortnight of workshops.
Show a board a hazard-and-top-event overview, or walk an engineer through every barrier. Five levels of detail, one diagram.
Export diagrams and barrier registers to PDF, image or spreadsheet — formatted for the report, not for your screen.
Flag critical controls, attach escalation factors and support factors, and keep the whole picture in one diagram. The vocabulary matches the ICMM method you already run.
No modules you'll never open. The interface shows the diagram and the fields the method actually needs.
Threats, barriers, escalation factors, degradation controls. The vocabulary matches the method you already run.
Features
The canvas understands Bowtie structure, so it does the layout for you. Drop a barrier on a line, drag it to reorder, or move it from the preventive side to the mitigative side — the diagram re-routes itself.
Drag barriers to reorder — even preventive to mitigative
Drop a barrier straight onto the line it belongs to
Automatic routing — no manual alignment
The editor
Pick up a threat or a consequence and everything hanging off it comes too. Drop the row where it belongs and the diagram redraws itself around the new order.
Drag whole rows to reorder threats and consequences
Barriers and escalation factors travel with the row
Lines redraw on drop — nothing to tidy up afterwards
Restructuring
How much detail you show depends on who is in the room. A consultation workshop, a management briefing and a detailed review each need a different view of the same bowtie.
Toggle detailed descriptions on or off for threats, consequences and barriers
Critical controls shown or hidden with one button
DETAILED INFORMATION
Library
Keep your standard threats, barriers and critical controls in a shared library, then drag them onto any Bowtie. Import and export libraries to move them between files and teams.
Copy and paste items across bowties
Import and export whole libraries
Consistent controls across every diagram
Notes
Attach a note to any element of the bowtie and the thinking behind it is always clear — the assumption, the action, or the reason a barrier was rated the way it was. Sticky Notes are clearly displayed. All notes can be exported to Excel.
Notes on any element in the diagram
A marker shows at a glance where the detail sits
Context stays in the file, not in a separate document
Presentation levels
Show a board the hazard and top event, or walk an engineer through every barrier and escalation factor. Step the detail up or down without redrawing anything.
Five levels, from overview to full detail
Present to any audience from one file
Switch levels without redrawing anything
Branding
Set the colours to match your corporate palette or your existing risk convention, so what you hand over looks like it came out of your own management system rather than someone else's tool.
Set colours for threats, barriers, top events and consequences
Match a corporate palette or an existing risk convention
The same look across every diagram you issue
Work across files
Rename a barrier, update an owner or retire a control, and push it across up to twenty Bowties in a single file. No opening each diagram one by one.
Global changes across up to 20 Bowties in one file
Update a shared barrier everywhere it appears
Keep a whole file consistent in one step
Dashboard
Group diagrams into projects and nest folders up to four levels deep, so the dashboard mirrors your plant, your units and your systems. Find any diagram in seconds.
Folders and subfolders, four levels deep
Projects, folders and cloud storage
Every diagram for a site on one screen
Reporting & export
Export the diagram as a print-ready PDF or high-resolution image, and the underlying data as a spreadsheet.
Export one or all diagrams to Excel
Export one or all diagrams to PDF
Export diagrams as graphics (PNG, JPG or SVG)
Presenting
Send one or all the bowties in a file to PowerPoint and they arrive as a fully editable slide pack, laid out in your corporate colours and auto sized for the content.
Export one or all diagrams directly to slides
All shapes are fully editable in PowerPoint
Ready for the safety case briefing or the Board presentation
— How it works
STEP 01
Name the hazard and the top event, then add the threats that could cause it and the consequences if it happens.
Hazard → top event
STEP 02
Place preventive and mitigative barriers on each pathway, assign owners, and assess barrier performance.
Barriers → owners
STEP 03
Export one or more diagrams to stakeholders as PowerPoint, Excel (data only), PDF, or high resolution graphics files.
Export → review
The same order you'd run the workshop in — which is the order the software walks you through.

About Bunya Bowtie
Bunya Bowtie was built by people who had spent too many workshops fighting a drawing tool that was never meant to draw a Bowtie — nudging boxes, re-routing lines, and losing an afternoon to alignment.
So we made the method the product. Bunya Bowtie knows what a threat is, what a barrier does, and where an escalation factor belongs. It is deliberately narrow, and that's the point: it's quick to learn, quick to run, and priced for a team rather than an enterprise licence negotiation.

Bunya Bowtie is open by invitation while I keep the group small enough to support properly. Tell me a bit about your work and I'll be in touch personally.
Only your email is required, everything else just helps me prioritise.
